Methodology

Every rate and rule on RupeeScope is a dated row in a data file with a named source. This page explains how those rows are gathered, checked and shown, and lists every dataset with the date it was last checked.

Last updated 1 Nov 2026.

What counts as a rule

A rule is any number a calculator or page depends on that someone else sets: a tax rate, a stamp duty, an exchange charge, a broker's brokerage. Rules are stored as data, not written into the code. When a broker or the government changes a rate, we add a new dated row. We do not overwrite the old one, so a calculation for a past date still uses the rate that applied then.

Where rules come from

Every row names one source with a label, a link and the day we last confirmed the value against it. We prefer the primary document. The data holds 30 distinct sources, grouped by kind below.

Kinds of source and how many distinct sources of each kind the data holds
KindWhat it isIn the data
StatuteThe text of an Act or rule.0
RegulatorA notice, circular or regulation from a regulator or ministry such as SEBI or the Ministry of Finance.3
ExchangeA circular from a stock exchange such as NSE or BSE.8
BrokerA broker's own public charges or help page.6
SecondaryA news article, bulletin or explainer. Used only where a primary document could not be read, and marked in the notes.13

We do not scrape or buy licensed data. Figures are read from public documents and entered by hand, and a detail we could not confirm is written into the row's note and shown on the page as "Not yet verified" rather than left out.

How rules are dated

Each row carries two dates, and they mean different things.

  • Effective from is the day the rule starts to apply. It stays in force until the next row starts. A rule announced in advance, such as a Budget change that starts on 1 April, can be added early with its future date, so it switches on exactly that day.
  • Checked on is the day we last confirmed the value against its source. It does not mean the rule changed that day.

Trades before 1 Nov 2024 are not supported by the charges calculators, because exchange charges before then depended on trading volume and are not in the data. Tax rules are covered from the dates shown in the table below.

Verification and freshness

Rates go out of date quietly, so every calculator shows when its rates were last checked, and warns when they are getting old. The warning uses the oldest source behind the result.

Days since the last check at which a warning is shown
Kind of ruleShown as ageing fromShown as stale from
Broker charges30 days45 days
Statutory charges90 days120 days

Broker pages change more often than statutes do, which is why the broker limits are shorter. Every row was last checked between 1 Nov 2026 and 6 Nov 2026.

Review before publishing

A rule only changes through an edit to its data file. The file is checked against a strict format when the site is built (dates in order, rates between zero and one, a source on every row), and a file that fails stops the build. Automated tests then work example trades and tax cases through the same rules.

Text written for guides is read and approved by a person before it is published. See the editorial policy.

Every dataset and when it was checked

This table is generated from the data files each time the site is built, so it cannot drift from what the calculators use.

IPO pages and grey market premium

RupeeScope has no official source for grey market premiums. Any figure we show is entered by hand with its source label and the time it was observed, is shown as of that time, greys out after 24 hours and disappears after 72 hours. Dates, price band, lot size and issue size come from the offer documents and exchange notices, each with a link and the day we checked it.

Where a figure is labelled "market reports", it is compiled from third-party market reports by a process the owner confirms before it is published; it is still unofficial and not advice.

See the IPO list. A figure that is wrong or out of date can be reported through the corrections process below.

What we do not model

Rules files hold the standard published rates. Paid broker plans, discounts for particular account holders, minimum balance rules and one-off offers are generally not modelled, and each broker page lists the specific cases its data leaves out. Tax figures assume a resident individual below 60. Where a note says a detail is not yet verified, treat it as a prompt to check the source yourself.

Reporting an error

If a rate, date or explanation looks wrong, please tell us through the contact page and include the page address and the source you are comparing against. Confirmed errors are fixed and listed on the corrections page.
