Muhurat trading is a short session that NSE and BSE hold on Diwali, on the day of Lakshmi Puja. A muhurat is an auspicious time. For many traders and investors in India the session marks the start of a new year in the traditional Hindu calendar, Samvat, and some place a small order as a token start to the year.
It is a normal trading session in every other way: orders are matched by the exchange as on any day, and trades carry the usual charges.
The exchanges list Muhurat trading on Sunday 8 Nov 2026, for Diwali Lakshmi Puja. That is a Sunday, a day the market is normally shut. The date comes from NSE circular NSE/CMTR/71775, Trading Holidays for Calendar Year 2026 (12 Dec 2025) (opens in a new tab), checked on 1 Nov 2026.
| Part of the session | Time |
|---|---|
| Pre-open (orders collected, then matched) | 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM |
| Normal trading | From 2:20 PM |
| Close | Most reports give 3:30 PM for normal trading; some give 3:40 PM, counting the closing session |
Not yet verified. On 7 November 2026 we could not read the NSE circular that sets the session timings. These times are as reported by brokers and the financial press, which agree on the 2:20 PM start but not on the close. Check the NSE circular or your broker before you place an order.

A trade in the Muhurat session is an ordinary trade, so brokerage, STT, exchange charges, the SEBI fee, stamp duty and GST apply as they would on any other day. A small token trade can lose a noticeable share of its value to fixed charges, such as a flat brokerage fee or the DP charge when you later sell from demat.
